About Jim

Jim Fogarty is an AILA registered Landscape Architect based in Melbourne, Australia. With over thirty internationally recognised design awards including sixteen gold medals, Jim is passionate about raising the profile of Australian garden design both in Australia, and overseas.

Early experience was gained working at Jenny Smith Gardens, before moving to Cairns in 1995 where he was landscape maintenance supervisor for Woodman’s landscaping, dealing in commercial landscape construction.

Relocating to Sydney in 1996, Jim worked on ‘Monday To Friday’ on Channel 10 presenting weekly gardening segments. He then returned to Melbourne in 1997 where he was drawn back into garden design and set up his own business.

In 2016, Jim formalised his qualifications by registering as a Landscape Architect with the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA).

Since graduating from Burnley Horticultural College in 1992, Jim has been awarded over thirty internationally recognised design awards including sixteen gold medals. Jim gained early experience at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show including 4 Gold Medals, 3 Awards for Design Excellence and has twice won the City of Melbourne Best in Show Award.

In 2015 Jim was Convener of judges at the inaugural Brisbane International Garden Show.

Jim started his media career in 1995 writing for the ‘Cairns Life’ Magazine. In 2004 Jim was co- author of Australian Inspiration, by Cliff Green. This book tells the story of the garden designed by Jim, which was the first time an Australian based team travelled from Australia to exhibit a show garden at the famous Chelsea Flower Show in London (published 2004 by Lothian). In 2006, Jim wrote the garden design chapter in the 42nd Edition of the famous Yates Garden Guide, which continues to be republished.

In 1996 Jim was the Gardening presenter on Monday to Friday hosted by Brigitte Duclos on CH10 produced by Newmont TV.  From 1999-2007, Jim was the Victorian designer for Backyard Blitz Ch9 (off camera) produced by CTC productions. Jim was a regular panel member with host Tim Entwisle on Radio National’s ‘Talking Plants’ radio series which aired 2014-2016.

Jim is a past National President of the Horticultural Media Association Australia, and past President HMA Victoria, and in 2019 was awarded Honorary Life Membership “for distinguished service and dedicated commitment to horticulture and the media.”

Jim continues to design gardens for private and commercial clients as well as designing Show Gardens. As well as his local projects, his international projects can range from designing gardens to judging, providing design master classes, and to working with major organisations and sponsors.

With post Covid interest in lifestyle property purchase on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, Jim has been in growing demand for his knowledge & expertise in creating gardens using Australian native and indigenous plants. Jim’s family history extends 5 generations in Flinders, so he knows the area well, but importantly, he understands the environment that plants need to survive. Jim is passionate about preserving the coastal & bush character of the Mornington Peninsula.
