Gold Medal & Best in Show

“Memories of England” is a garden inspired largely by many gardens I have visited in England. The garden works on the typical English back garden dimensions you would find in London or even in a small English village (rectangular in shape) with a paved terrace area and upper lawn.

The main feature of this garden is the plants. Feature plants include climbing Roses, Clematis, Delphiniums, Foxgloves, Sage and Wall Flowers to name a few. The central lawn area includes many flowering shrubs for full sun, whilst the back area contains many plants for dappled light and shade.

The hard scape features a smashed London brick wall using Austral Bricks London bricks. The wall details the structure of the ruins of an adjoining building which is typical in old English walls. This is also symbolic of the many “walled gardens” found in England. An English picket fence features on the left boundary draped in flowering Clematis and climbing Roses. Central to the focal point is a birch posted arbour which is again draped with flowering Clematis.

A lower stone terrace in the foreground features English Millstone flagstones and Millstone walling typical of old English gardens. Stepping up to the lawn area is a Highland Slate wall and steps.

Bronze features in the English magpie bird bath as well as the planter boxes on the front terrace. English furniture from the Cotswold collection finishes off this little piece of England at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show 2005.

The garden was awarded a Gold Medal as well as the City of Melbourne Award for Best in Show in 2005.
