Garden Media Experience

Jim obtained a Certificate in Journalism at Cairns TAFE in 1995, and his media career started as the gardening column writer for the Cairns Post in 1995 writing for the ‘Cairns Life Magazine.’ Since then he has worked across the many and varied aspects of garden journalism including TV, radio, Magazines, newspapers & books.

Jim wrote for the Melbourne Age newspaper from 2006-2014 and was a contributor for Burkes Backyard Magazine in Australia for 10 years until its closure in March 2013. In 2004 Jim was co- author of Australian Inspiration, by Cliff Green. This book tells the story of the garden designed by Jim, which was the first time an Australian based team travelled from Australia to exhibit a show garden at the famous Chelsea Flower Show in London (published 2004 by Lothian). In 2006, Jim wrote the garden design chapter in the 42nd Edition of the famous Yates Garden Guide, which continues to be republished.

In 1996 Jim was the Gardening presenter on Monday to Friday hosted by Brigitte Duclos on CH10 produced by Newmont TV.  From 1999-2007, Jim was the Victorian designer for Backyard Blitz Ch9 (off camera) produced by CTC productions. In 2013 Jim was a Gardens Judge on series 1 of the Ch7 TV ratings hit ‘House Rules.’

Jim was a regular panel member with host Tim Entwisle on Radio National’s ‘Talking Plants’ radio series which aired 2014-2016.

Jim is a past national President and Life Member of the Horticultural Media Association Australia.

In 2015, Jim joined Australians Studying Abroad (ASA) as a garden tour leader. Join Jim & visit some of the greatest gardens of Japan.

Jim is one of Australia’s most knowledgeable and qualified guides of Japanese gardens. A graduate of Burnley Horticultural College (University of Melbourne), Jim has competed several times designing gardens in Japan, winning the award for Best Design at the 2009 World Garden Competition in Shizuoka Prefecture, and Gold and Best in Show at the 2011 Gardening World Cup Nagasaki. Over many years Jim has carried out his own research into Japan’s most iconic gardens uncovering layers of fascinating information not widely known, and has a passionate interest in contemporary influences of Japanese garden Design.

Jim has presented garden and design related talks all over Australia and overseas for many years.

Clients include universities & colleges, botanic gardens, industry associations, conferences, corporations, garden clubs, Probus, Rotary, & garden shows to name a few.

All talks are presented using power point presentations with images.

Jim was a regular panel member on a RN radio show with host Tim Entwisle called ‘Talking Plants.’ The show aired over the summer season of 2015 & 2016.

Jim’s design work has taken him to many regions of the world and he constantly takes pictures of plants and objects in the natural landscape that provide inspiration. Jim uses his photos for articles in printed media, books and for his own design inspiration.

The Joy Harland Memorial Photographic Competition.
This competition, run by the Horticultural Media Association of Australia, was won by Jim in 2008. The judge said “A bold, happy image with good central interest and full of appeal. Strong, well balanced composition, pleasing use of focus and blurred background. A straightforward shot superbly executed. Definite cover material.”

Australian Inspiration – A bush Garden goes to Chelsea

This book recounts the amazing year of planning, frustration, hard work and triumph involved along with the contractor Semken Landscaping and major sponsor Flemings Nursery to take the first Australian based Show Garden that was accepted to exhibit at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in London, winning a Silver-Gilt Flora Show Garden Award.

Projects that have been designed by Jim also appear in books published in the UK, USA, Australia, Singapore, Japan & China.
