Very Special Kids

Many people contributed cash & kind for the construction of this garden. It is worth noting the contribution of: Andrew and the boys from Semken Landscaping including Paul, Daz, Brad, Axe & many others, amazing lighting by Light on Landscape, pavers that glow in the dark by Cast in Stone Pavers, Daisy's garden supplies, Fleming's Nurseries, Bruce the brickie, Lotus Water gardens for the water feature as well as media support from members of the Victorian Horticultural Media Association. There are many others who I may have forgotten to mention. It's a credit to you all for what you achieved.

Very Special Kids
Very Special Kids' House is Australia's first respite and paediatric palliative care centre, in Malvern.

In June 2003 Jim Fogarty donated the design of the overall 'Master Plan' of the garden and playground and was commissioned by IOOF to design a 'Sensory Garden' for Very Special Kids (VSK).

Semken Landscaping donated the construction and project management of the 'Master Plan' and 'Sensory Garden' with the assistance of a group of senior players from the Richmond Football Club, known as the 'Magnificent 7' (M7) lead by Greg Stafford. The project was also assisted by the donations and support of many industry bodies that we have tried to list. Plants for the garden were kindly donated by Fleming's Nurseries.

The overall 'Master Plan's' main aim was to design a garden which was to combine all of the following areas and achieve each areas objectives. The areas included Marcus' memorial garden, a family area which consisted of seating constructed around a VSK logo mosaic, a round garden, play equipment, yellow brick road, games area made up of a basketball key and bullseye target, humpty dumpty garden, BBQ area, storage bay to the sandpit conversion and the piggy bank conversion. These pigs are topiarised pigs using Muehlenbeckia complexa.

The 'Sensory Garden' was designed to incorporate the use of the five senses; hearing, sight, smell, taste and touch. This was achieved through various ways including choice of plant material, such as fragrant, edible and textured plants. Other senses were aroused with the implementation of a water feature, varying paved surfaces, wind chimes and lighting. Once a lawn area, the garden is now much loved by the kids with flowering plants and a playground for the children, family, friends and staff of Very Special Kids.
