Sydney in Bloom 2005 'Sanctuary'
This garden is based on simplicity - in both form and colour. The idea is to make people think about using the principles of simplicity to create a calming atmosphere and sanctuary in a garden.
The garden is designed using shapes of squares and cubes. The garden itself, with a perimeter of 8 x 9m forms a rectangle on the ground. Three cubes of different size are used as the dominant features of this garden.
The largest cube acts as a defined garden space in the back right hand corner of the garden. This is where you enter a garden, through two jelly bean shaped voids, suitable for balcony and small garden inspiration. In this cube is a seating space with paving and planting. Walls are rendered with a white exterior and a grey interior. Portholes allow for extra viewing into and out of the cube, which forms the nucleus of the garden.
The medium cube to the left is made of dry stacked bluestone from Victoria. This adds texture to the backdrop of the foliage planting as well as being a feature. The stone cube also provides some privacy to the lawn at the rear of the garden.
The small steel cube to the front right of the garden is the water feature. Finished in black enamel, water cascades over the top of the cube running down the sides into a trough below. This creates a glass type effect and is very calming in the garden.
Paving is white and grey and timber work is black and grey. These neutral tones provide the backdrop to a green planting palette using foliage shapes for definition and interest.
This design is modern and simple. The garden aims to educate that a hard scape can be kept simple in colour scheme, to allow the plants to dominate the landscape.
