PROFILE
Jim Fogarty is a landscape designer and gardening media personality based in Melbourne. With over twenty internationally recognised design awards including eleven gold medals, Jim continues to raise the profile of Australian garden design both in Australia, and overseas.
History
Jim Fogarty graduated from Burnley Horticultural College in 1992 with a passion for designing gardens. Early experience was gained working with Andrew Seccull at Jenny Smith Gardens, before moving to Cairns in 1995 where he was landscape maintenance supervisor for Woodman's landscaping, dealing in commercial construction.
Relocating to Sydney in 1996, Jim worked on "Monday To Friday" on Channel 10 presenting weekly gardening segments. He then returned to Melbourne in 1997 where he was drawn back into garden design and set up his own business.
Garden Shows
One of the highlights of Jim’s career has been his experiences at the Chelsea Flower Show in London. His first Chelsea was 2004 where he designed the ‘Australian Inspiration’ Show Garden, winning a Silver-Gilt medal. Jim returned to the Chelsea Flower Show in 2011, designing the Australian Garden presented by the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. The garden was awarded a gold medal and was the first time an Australian Show garden had been on the prestigious Main Avenue.
Jim has won numerous awards at the Melbourne International Flower & Garden Show including 4 Gold Medals, 3 Awards for Design Excellence and has twice won the City of Melbourne Best in Show Award. Jim’s experience with Show Gardens has also won him Gold & Silver medals at Sydney in Bloom.
In 2006, Jim was invited by the Singapore National Parks Board to compete in the inaugural Singapore Garden Festival. Amongst top international designers, Jim won a gold medal as well as the RHS (UK) Award for Horticultural Excellence. At the 2008 Singapore Garden Festival, Jim won a gold medal for his garden inspired by Jervis Bay in Australia. In July 2010, Jim won a gold medal and the award for Horticultural Excellence for his ‘Daintree’ Show Garden.
In May 2009, Jim won a gold medal and the major award for the best design for his Australian Show Garden at the World Garden Competition in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. In October 2010, the first Gardening World Cup was held near Nagasaki to commemorate 65 years since the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. The aim of the show was to use gardens as a symbolic way to bring together countries of the world in peace. Jim was selected as the Australian representative and his garden won the award for best construction and a silver medal for his interpretation of world peace. A monument now stands 100m from the epicentre of the bomb drop, listing the names of the 10 international designers along with individual messages of peace - see more details here. In 2010 Jim was one of only four international designers featured in a book Called ‘Green Mind’ published in Japan and featuring the top Japanese landscape and garden designers. In 2011, Jim returned to the Gardening World Cup designing an Australian Show Garden depicting the influence of bushfires on Australia’s landscape. The garden was awarded a Gold medal and the award for Best in Show.
Media
Jim is the current president of the Horticultural Media Association of Victoria, and is a regular writer for Burkes Backyard Magazine in Australia and the Melbourne Age newspaper. In 2004 Jim was co- author of Australian Inspiration, by Cliff Green. This book tells the story of the garden designed by Jim, which was the first time an Australian based team travelled from Australia to exhibit a show garden at the famous Chelsea Flower Show in London (published 2004 by Lothian). In 2006, Jim wrote the garden design chapter in the 42nd Edition of the famous Yates Garden Guide, which continues to be republished.
Dulux & Jim Fogarty
In 2010, Jim teamed up with Dulux Australia to select a range of paint colours inspired by the landscape of Australia for the new Dulux Designer Series. This was the second designer series launched by Dulux, the first being with fashion designer Kirrily Johnston. See the Dulux Site.
Today
Today he designs gardens for private and commercial clients as well as designing Show Gardens. His international projects can range from designing gardens to judging, providing design master classes, and to working with major organizations and sponsors.
