International Flower & Garden Show 2002 - Urban Space
Jim designed this garden with a very modern approach whilst keeping the disciplined influence of older styled gardening principles and perennial border planting.
The central part of the garden is a water channel bordered by bands of white pavers running through the central axis to the lake and waterspout beyond. The north side of the garden is framed by an angled charcoal wall, which tapers to the ground as it nears the lake. Twelve, two metre tall rusted steel cones with climbing plants offset the wall and provide elevated interest. Burgundy foliaged border plants and flowering structured perennial plants fill the straight more formalised garden bed enclosed by Jarrah decking.
To the south side a sweeping perennial flowering garden bed leads the eye back to the focal point and distracts from the formality of the northern bed and central water channel. Arising out of this bed is a Hidcote blue timber structure resembling an angled pergola. The colour of the structure brings out the flower colours of the perennial plants and encloses the site on the southern side. A sweeping lawn ties this bed into the central water channel, whilst bluestone bands diagonally pierce the lawn, water channel and obvious focal point. Deciduous trees border the south side.
The aim of this garden was to find that perfect balance between modern design and the older world of gardening, which many of us take for granted.
