Sunken Garden

A dream came true for this garden lover in the Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Jim designed this garden, and as you can see from the photos, in 3 years the plants reached a happy maturity.

The client was a passionate gardener and wanted to squeeze everything into his back yard. Areas of the garden include: a private rainforest courtyard for the bathroom, a Tuscan entertainment area, an English lawn with perennial beds, a reflection pond, a birch grove, a large parterre vegetable garden, a fruit orchard, and an orchid house.

Each area of the garden was segmented using hedging of Luma apiculata to create a "room" effect. The parterre vegetable garden was planted using different culinary themes and styles of cooking. The fences around the vegetable garden were planted with espaliered stone fruits and Ballerina Apple trees from Flemings.

Although influenced from gardens of Italy, France & England, the garden included some Australian plants such as Eucalyptus caesia, Grevillea 'Ned Kelly' as well as a Telopea sp as a feature.

This garden was a true investment of lifestyle for this garden loving client, and as you can see from the photos, it is not hard to work out why.
