Flinders Rural Garden
Set in a rural area on the Mornington Peninsula, these clients came to Jim to design them an area they could use for their family and for entertaining. The main problem these clients faced was exposure to wind.
Noticing a protected area under the house, Jim utilised this space in the design which was well protected from the elements.
This striking house was designed by Jackson Clements Burrows and the landscape was designed to have neutral colours only, so as not to detract from the lime green feature colour used by the architect.
Rammed earth walls mixed with natural crazy stone paving and natural exposed aggregate surfacing using local crushed granite form a great earthy backdrop to the simple and rustic planting scheme.
The earth walls are free standing and form a windbreak whilst not totally enclosing the space. A timber slatted screen suspended in the causeway helps to filter the wind speed down and enclose the family space which sits to the north side of the house.
An allowance for a small enclosure works as a dog area and curved timber benches provide informal seating.
What was once overlooked and bare ground is now a great family entertainment space protected from the elements.
